This month on Stretch Tarot we are exploring card XVII, The Star. We started with personal notes on the card, then dug deep into its symbolism in my first paid subscriber post. This week, I’ve reimagined the card using the Stretch Tarot DIY Deck and companion book.
I invite YOU to get creative with The Star and try your hand at making your own version of this card. Cut and collage like me, doodle on a post it note, snap a photo, or paint oils on canvas — whatever style suits you best. Trust me, creativity is the key to deepening your connection to Tarot.
The Steps
I ripped up a page from an old dictionary and stuck scraps to the card using Antique Mod Podge
I used a sandy coloured acrylic paint to blend with the card
Next, I used grey acrylic paint to create a horizon at the bottom
I used black chalk paint to fill in the borders
I selected and cut out my images from the DIY Deck companion book
I arranged the images and glued them down using Antique Mod Podge
Using Posca Paint Pens in black and white, I drew additional stars
The Symbolism
The Star card has a strong connection to the unconscious mind. It is about how our thoughts and perceptions shape our sense of self, and how we can explore our relationship with the unconcious through reflective acts, such as meditiation and journalling — anything which stops us and puts us on pause.
Traditionally, the unconscious mind is symbolised by a pool of water. I reimagined this with the woman’s head in which the figure stands and pours the water.
I made sure that one stream of water is being poured into the woman’s head, and one outside of it. This is to symbolise the idea of filtering our thoughts, discarding those which hold us back or create negative beliefs about the self, while prioritising input which helps us to grow into the person we wish to become.
Your Turn
Take this as your call to action. I would LOVE for you to have a go at making your own card and to hear about your experience of it. Even if you think you’re rubbish at art, there is so much to be gained from the experience.
If you want an easy starting point, I’ve created the DIY Deck and companion book to make the process of creating your own Tarot cards as straight-forward as possible.
